The air is first compressed and then cooled to extremely low temperatures, typically around -196 degrees Celsius, which is the boiling point of oxygen. Nitrogen, with a higher boiling point, remains in the liquid phase and is then separated and collected.

Another type of luchtscheider is the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit, which uses a series of adsorption beds filled with molecular sieves to separate the gases. The air is compressed and passed through the beds, where the different gases are adsorbed onto the sieves based on their molecular sizes. The gases are then released from the beds by reducing the pressure, allowing for the separation and collection of the different components.
