Luchtkoelers, also known as evaporative coolers or swamp coolers, are devices that cool air through the process of water evaporation. Unlike air conditioners that use refrigerants to cool air, luchtkoelers rely on a natural process. They work by drawing in warm, dry air and passing it over water-saturated pads. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, lowering its temperature. The cooled, humidified air is then blown back into the room.

The effectiveness of a luchtkoeler is dependent on the ambient humidity. They are most efficient in hot, dry climates where the evaporation rate is high. In humid conditions, the air can only absorb so much moisture, reducing the cooling effect and potentially making the air feel clammy. Luchtkoelers use significantly less energy than traditional air conditioners, making them a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective cooling solution in suitable climates. They do not require a complex exhaust system and can be used with windows or doors open, promoting ventilation. Maintenance typically involves refilling the water reservoir and occasional cleaning of the pads to prevent mold or mineral buildup.
