Lowcell refers to a type of lithium-ion battery technology that emphasizes reduced cobalt content. Cobalt is a valuable and sometimes ethically problematic material used in the cathodes of many lithium-ion batteries, contributing to their energy density and lifespan. However, its scarcity and the conditions under which it is mined have led to research and development efforts focused on reducing or eliminating its use.

Lowcell battery chemistries aim to achieve similar performance characteristics to traditional cobalt-containing batteries while utilizing more abundant and cost-effective materials. Common approaches include increasing the nickel content in the cathode (leading to Nickel-Manganese-Oxide or NMO, and Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese-Oxide or NCM with reduced cobalt, and Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum-Oxide or NCA with reduced cobalt) or exploring entirely cobalt-free cathode materials such as Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP).

The primary motivations behind developing lowcell technology are to lower manufacturing costs, improve supply chain stability, and address concerns related to the environmental and social impact of cobalt mining. While some lowcell chemistries, like LFP, may have slightly lower energy density compared to high-cobalt alternatives, they often offer advantages in terms of safety, cycle life, and thermal stability, making them suitable for a range of applications including electric vehicles and stationary energy storage.
