Loomweaving is the process of fabric production by interlacing two sets of threads, the warp and the weft, on a loom. The loom holds warp yarns under tension while the weft is passed through to interlace with the warp, forming cloth. Weaving can be done on simple hand looms or larger industrial machines, and encompasses a range of techniques and designs.

The basic steps include preparing and arranging the warp, threading the loom, forming the shed, passing the weft with a shuttle or other device, and beating the weft into place with a reed or batten. Different loom types control the shed and beat according to the desired pattern, and the process can be manual or powered by engines.

Common weave structures include plain weave, twill, and satin, while more complex designs use dobby or jacquard systems to control individual warp threads. Weaving can employ natural fibers such as cotton, wool, linen, and silk, as well as synthetic materials or blends, producing fabrics for clothing, interiors, and technical applications.

Loomweaving has deep historical roots in many cultures, from ancient civilizations to traditional crafts. The rise of mechanized looms during the Industrial Revolution transformed textile production, but hand weaving, backstrap and frame looms remain important for crafts and education. Today loomweaving is practiced both as artisanal craft and industrial manufacturing, across a wide range of textiles and products.
