Ragnarok is a pivotal event in Norse mythology, often translated as "Doom of the Gods" or "Twilight of the Gods." It is prophesied to be a great battle and a series of natural disasters that will culminate in the death of many gods, including Odin, Thor, and Loki, and the subsequent destruction and renewal of the world. The events leading up to Ragnarok include signs such as a harsh, prolonged winter known as Fimbulwinter, and the breaking of moral codes among humans.

The battle itself is described as taking place on the plain of Vigrid. Various figures from Norse cosmology are destined to play roles in this final conflict. For instance, the giant wolf Fenrir will swallow Odin, and Thor will slay the world serpent Jörmungandr but die from its venom. Loki, the trickster god, will lead the forces of chaos against the gods.

Despite the catastrophic destruction, Ragnarok is not solely an end. It is also a beginning. Following the battle and the death of the old gods, a new, more just world is expected to emerge from the waters. Some gods, like Baldr and Höðr, are foretold to return, and the surviving humans will repopulate the earth. This cycle of destruction and rebirth is a fundamental theme within the Norse eschatological narrative.
