Lizis Island was named after Elizabeth, the wife of Captain John Strong, who was one of the first Englishmen to explore the Falkland Islands in the 17th century. The island has historical significance as a former whaling station site, although no remnants of the station are visible today.

Due to its remote location and lack of infrastructure, Lizis Island is not a common destination for tourists. However, it is occasionally visited by researchers and wildlife enthusiasts.
