A liveryman is a member of one of the ancient Livery Companies of the City of London. These companies, also known as guilds, are professional or trade organizations that historically played a significant role in the governance and economic life of the City. While their original functions related to regulating trades and crafts, most Livery Companies today are charitable organizations focused on supporting their respective professions, education, and the wider community.

To become a liveryman, an individual must typically be elected or admitted into a specific Livery Company. The process of admission can vary between companies but often involves being proposed by existing members, demonstrating a connection to the company's trade or profession, and sometimes paying a significant admission fee or donation. Liverymen retain their membership for life.

Liverymen have a ceremonial role within the City of London. They are known for their distinctive uniforms, or "livery," which they wear on formal occasions, particularly during City processions and events like the Lord Mayor's Show. They also have the unique right to vote in the election of the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs of the City of London, a privilege stemming from their historical importance. While the direct trade regulation aspect has diminished, the Livery Companies and their liverymen continue to be a visible and respected part of London's civic and ceremonial life.
