Lisämunuaiskehitys refers to the embryonic development of the adrenal glands. These crucial endocrine organs, situated atop the kidneys, are responsible for producing essential hormones like adrenaline, cortisol, and aldosterone. The development process is complex, involving the coordinated growth and differentiation of two distinct tissues: the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla.

The adrenal cortex originates from the mesoderm, a germ layer derived from the inner part of the early embryo. Specifically, it forms from peritoneal epithelium. This region differentiates into the three distinct zones of the cortex: the zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, and zona reticularis, each producing different steroid hormones.

The adrenal medulla, on the other hand, develops from neural crest cells, which are migratory cells originating from the ectoderm. These cells migrate to the developing adrenal gland and differentiate into chromaffin cells, responsible for producing catecholamines such as epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine.

The development of both the cortex and medulla is influenced by a complex interplay of genetic factors and signaling molecules. Hormonal signals from the developing fetus and the mother also play a role in regulating this process. Disruptions in adrenal development can lead to various congenital adrenal hyperplasia conditions, affecting hormone production and potentially causing significant health issues. The precise timing and coordination of these developmental events are vital for the proper functioning of the adrenal glands throughout life.
