These organs assist the main organ in carrying out its functions, often by providing secretions, structural support, or aiding in transport.

A prominent example of lisäelimistö is found in the digestive system. While the stomach and intestines are the primary organs of digestion and absorption, accessory organs like the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas are vital. The liver produces bile, which aids in fat digestion; the gallbladder stores and concentrates bile; and the pancreas secretes digestive enzymes and hormones like insulin. Without these accessory organs, digestion and nutrient processing would be severely impaired.

Another context where the term might be applied is in the reproductive system. For instance, in males, glands like the seminal vesicles and prostate gland are considered accessory organs as they contribute fluids that form semen, nourishing and transporting sperm, which are produced in the testes, the primary organs. Similarly, in females, glands that produce lubricating fluids can be seen as accessory to the primary reproductive organs. The concept emphasizes the collaborative nature of organ systems, where specialized structures work together to achieve a common biological goal.
