Liquefactive necrosis is a specific type of liquefactive process. It is characterized by the accumulation of inflammatory cells, primarily neutrophils, which release lysosomal enzymes that digest the necrotic tissue. This results in the formation of a soft, creamy, or even fluid-filled cavity. A classic example of liquefactive necrosis is seen in the center of bacterial abscesses.

Other conditions that can involve liquefactive processes include brain infarcts, where the brain tissue liquefies due to lack of oxygen, and certain types of cysts. The appearance and extent of liquefaction can provide important diagnostic clues for pathologists examining tissue samples.
