Liputtaminen is a Finnish term that translates to "flag flying" or "flag display" in English. It refers to the practice of displaying the Finnish flag, known as Siniristilippu (Blue Cross Flag), on official flagpoles. The practice is governed by specific regulations and traditions to ensure the flag's dignity and respect.

The Finnish flag is flown on all public buildings and institutions on official flag days. These include national holidays such as Independence Day (December 6th), May Day (Vappu), and Midsummer (Juhannus), as well as other significant national commemorations. Private citizens are also encouraged to fly the flag on these days and on other occasions of personal importance, such as birthdays or anniversaries, provided they adhere to the regulations.

There are established times for raising and lowering the flag. Generally, the flag is raised at 8:00 AM and lowered at sunset, or at 9:00 PM if it is still light. On certain days, such as Midsummer and Independence Day, the flag remains raised throughout the night. When two flags are flown on the same pole, the Finnish flag takes precedence. Specific rules also apply to the condition of the flag, ensuring it is clean and undamaged. Improper or disrespectful use of the flag is strictly prohibited.
