The concept covers several functional classes: lipid-binding proteins that recognize specific lipids via lipid-binding domains; lipid-anchored proteins that are covalently linked to lipid moieties, which targets them to membranes; and lipid-transfer proteins that shuttle lipids between membranes or organelles.
