Lipoprotein is a complex particle composed of lipids and proteins that transports fatty acids and cholesterol through the blood plasma. These spherical structures are essential for the transport and metabolism of fats in the body. The protein component, known as apolipoprotein, plays a crucial role in their structural integrity, acting as ligands for cell surface receptors and activators for enzymes involved in lipid metabolism.

Lipoproteins are classified based on their density, which is determined by the ratio of lipids to proteins. Major classes include chylomicrons, very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Chylomicrons are the largest and least dense, primarily transporting dietary fats. VLDL particles are synthesized in the liver and transport endogenous triglycerides. As triglycerides are removed, VLDL transforms into IDL and then LDL, which is the primary carrier of cholesterol to peripheral tissues. HDL particles, conversely, are involved in reverse cholesterol transport, collecting excess cholesterol from tissues and returning it to the liver for excretion.

The balance of different lipoprotein levels in the blood is critical for cardiovascular health. Elevated levels of LDL cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease, while higher levels of HDL cholesterol are generally considered protective.
