This environment is complex and dynamic, heavily influenced by the types of lipids present, their saturation, and the presence of other molecules like proteins and cholesterol. In a lipid bilayer, the core hydrophobic region is largely dictated by the fatty acid tails of phospholipids and other amphipathic lipids. The polar head groups, on the other hand, interact with the aqueous environment on either side of the membrane.
