Interopérabilité refers to the ability of different systems, devices, applications, or products to connect and communicate in a coordinated way, without effort from the end user. It is a fundamental concept in information technology and many other fields, enabling seamless data exchange and collaboration. For example, in computing, interoperability allows a spreadsheet program to open and edit a file created by a different spreadsheet program, or for a web browser to display content from any website regardless of the server's operating system.

The concept extends beyond software. In telecommunications, interoperability ensures that a mobile phone from one carrier can connect to a network from another. In healthcare, it allows different electronic health record systems to share patient information. In manufacturing, it enables machines from different vendors to work together on an assembly line.

Achieving interoperability often relies on standardized protocols, formats, and interfaces. These standards provide a common language that disparate systems can understand, facilitating smooth integration and reducing the need for custom-built bridges or complex workarounds. Without interoperability, systems would remain isolated, leading to inefficiencies, data silos, and a fragmented user experience. The pursuit of interoperability is a continuous effort as technology evolves and new systems are developed.
