Lining cells, also known as epithelial cells, are a fundamental type of cell found in multicellular organisms. They form continuous sheets that cover the surfaces of organs and line cavities, blood vessels, and internal organs. These cells play a crucial role in protection, secretion, absorption, and filtration.

The primary function of lining cells is to create a barrier. For instance, the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, is composed of epithelial cells that protect the body from mechanical damage, pathogens, and dehydration. Internally, lining cells of the digestive tract absorb nutrients from food, while those in the kidneys filter waste products from the blood. In glands, specialized lining cells are responsible for secreting substances like hormones, enzymes, and mucus.

Lining cells exhibit a variety of shapes and arrangements depending on their location and function. They can be squamous (flat), cuboidal (cube-shaped), or columnar (tall and rectangular). These cells are often tightly packed together, forming junctions that create an impermeable barrier or allow for selective passage of substances. Their ability to differentiate into specialized types allows them to perform a wide array of physiological tasks essential for maintaining homeostasis and supporting the organism's life processes.
