L’indicatif, or the indicative mood, is a grammatical mood used to express statements of fact and questions about reality. It is the default mood in many languages for assertions and descriptions in main clauses, signaling events or states considered real.

In French grammar, l’indicatif comprises several tenses that encode time and aspect. The common forms are present (présent), present perfect-like (passé composé), imperfect (imparfait), and pluperfect (plus-que-parfait); plus a literary past (passé simple) and past perfect (passé antérieur); and the future tenses (futur simple and futur antérieur). In everyday speech, the passé composé and imparfait cover most past facts, while the passé simple and passé antérieur are mainly found in literature. The present indicates current or habitual actions, the imperfect describes past habits or ongoing states, and the perfect tenses relate actions completed relative to another time.

The indicative is used for factual statements, descriptions, and direct questions about real events. It contrasts with moods such as the subjunctive, which expresses doubt, possibility, or subjectivity, and the conditional, which covers hypothetical or polite statements. In many languages, the indicative forms are combined with auxiliary verbs to form compound tenses (for example, avoir or être in French; haber in Spanish; avere/essere in Italian).

Across Romance languages, l’indicatif shares the core function of signaling reality and factual content, while differing in specific tense inventories and usage conventions. In grammar references, it remains the central category for describing most plain, asserted propositions.
