liittymikohta

Liittymikohta is a Finnish term meaning “connection point” or “interface point.” It refers to the location where two networks, subsystems, or service boundaries meet. In telecommunications and information technology, liittymikohta is used to denote the boundary between a provider’s network and customer equipment, or more generally between two network elements. The point can be physical, such as a wall outlet, network jack, fiber termination point, or a demarcation device, or it can be logical, such as a routing or service boundary in configurations or diagrams.

In consumer broadband, the liittymikohta is the demarcation point where the operator’s network ends and customer-owned devices begin. Responsibility for maintenance and fault isolation is typically divided at this point: the operator handles up to the liittymikohta, while the customer handles beyond it. The exact location depends on the service and infrastructure (fiber, copper, wireless) and may involve devices such as an optical network terminal (ONT), modem, or DSL termination unit.

For service provisioning, accurately identifying the liittymikohta is important for delivering services, assigning IP addresses, and determining billing. In larger networks, it can refer to any boundary where a service interface is defined, including interconnections between operators or between campus and core networks.

Beyond telecom, the term is sometimes used more generally to describe any interface point between subsystems, devices, or software components, although more common Finnish terms in IT include rajapinta or liityntäpiste.
