Liimakankaat, also known as "slime molds" in English, are a unique group of organisms that exhibit characteristics of both fungi and amoebas. They are not plants, animals, or fungi, but rather belong to their own distinct taxonomic group, the Mycetozoa. Liimakankaat are found worldwide, typically in damp, shady environments such as forests and gardens.

These organisms have a complex life cycle that includes both mobile and stationary phases. In the mobile phase, liimakankaat exist as single-celled amoebae that move and feed on bacteria, yeast, and decaying organic matter. When conditions become unfavorable, such as during drought or food scarcity, these amoebae aggregate to form a multicellular structure known as a plasmodium. The plasmodium is a bright, often colorful, slimy mass that can move and feed as a single entity.

As the plasmodium matures, it transitions into the stationary phase, forming fruiting bodies that release spores. These spores are highly resistant to desiccation and can remain dormant for extended periods until favorable conditions return, at which point they germinate to form new amoebae, continuing the life cycle.

Liimakankaat play a significant role in the decomposition process, breaking down dead organic matter and recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem. They are also of interest to scientists studying cellular differentiation, pattern formation, and basic biological processes due to their unique life cycle and behavior. Some species of liimakankaat are considered harmless, while others can cause damage to crops and garden plants. Despite their simple structure, liimakankaat exhibit complex behaviors and are a fascinating subject of study in the field of biology.
