Lihvipasta, often translated as polishing paste or rubbing compound, is an abrasive material used to smooth and polish surfaces. It typically consists of a paste or gel containing fine abrasive particles suspended in a carrier substance. The abrasive particles, which can be made of materials like aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, or diamond, work to remove imperfections, scratches, and oxidation from a surface through friction.

The effectiveness of lihvipasta depends on the size of the abrasive grit. Coarser grits are used for removing deeper scratches and significant surface damage, while finer grits are employed for achieving a high-gloss finish. Different types of lihvipasta are formulated for specific materials and applications. For example, automotive lihvipasta is designed to remove paint defects and swirl marks, while metal polishing pastes are used to restore shine to metals like brass, silver, or stainless steel. Woodworking applications may use lihvipasta to smooth and prepare wood for finishing.

The application process generally involves applying a small amount of the paste to a clean cloth or applicator pad and then rubbing it onto the surface in a back-and-forth or circular motion. As the paste is worked, the abrasive particles break down, gradually smoothing the surface. After the desired level of smoothness is achieved, any residue is typically wiped away, often followed by a finer polish or sealant to protect the newly finished surface.
