Lihassyövyttä, also known as necrotizing fasciitis, is a severe bacterial infection that spreads rapidly and destroys soft tissue, including the fascia, which is the connective tissue surrounding muscles. It is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. The infection typically enters the body through a break in the skin, such as a cut, scrape, or insect bite. However, it can also occur spontaneously in individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.

The most common bacteria responsible for necrotizing fasciitis are Group A Streptococcus, but other bacteria can also cause the infection. Symptoms often appear suddenly and can include intense pain disproportionate to any visible wound, redness, swelling, fever, and blistering. As the infection progresses, the skin may turn purplish or black, indicating tissue death.

Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical presentation and can be confirmed with imaging tests and laboratory analysis of tissue samples. Treatment involves aggressive surgical debridement to remove the infected and dead tissue, which may need to be repeated. Antibiotics are also administered intravenously to combat the bacteria. In severe cases, amputation of the affected limb may be necessary to prevent the spread of the infection. Early recognition and prompt treatment are crucial for survival and minimizing long-term complications.
