Lihasensüüm, also known as muscle enzyme, refers to a group of enzymes that are predominantly found within muscle tissue. These enzymes play crucial roles in various metabolic processes essential for muscle function, including energy production, muscle contraction, and repair. The concentration and activity of certain muscle enzymes can change in response to physiological conditions and pathological states.

Several key muscle enzymes are frequently measured in clinical settings. Creatine kinase (CK) is a prominent example, involved in the energy buffering system of muscle cells. When muscle damage occurs, CK is released into the bloodstream, leading to elevated levels. Another important enzyme is lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), which participates in anaerobic glycolysis. Elevated LDH levels can indicate muscle injury or other tissue damage. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), an enzyme found in both muscle and liver, can also be elevated in cases of muscle damage.

Measurement of these muscle enzymes in blood serum is a common diagnostic tool for various muscle disorders, collectively known as myopathies. These can include genetic conditions like muscular dystrophies, inflammatory myopathies such as polymyositis, and rhabdomyolysis, a condition characterized by rapid skeletal muscle breakdown. Elevated enzyme levels can help confirm muscle involvement, assess the severity of damage, and monitor the effectiveness of treatment. However, it is important to note that elevated muscle enzyme levels can also be caused by factors other than primary muscle disease, such as strenuous physical activity or certain medications. Therefore, interpretation of these results requires careful consideration of the patient's clinical presentation and other diagnostic information.
