Lichtstromen is a Dutch term that literally means “streams of light.” In a general sense it denotes directed flows of light, often expressed as beams or rays formed by a light source or by the interaction of light with matter. In physics and engineering the concept is used to describe the transport of electromagnetic radiation in a specific direction, with attention to how the light can be guided, focused, or dispersed.

The physical basis of lichtstromen is light as electromagnetic radiation that propagates as waves and photons.
