Lichtstromen

Lichtstromen is a Dutch term that literally means “streams of light.” In a general sense it denotes directed flows of light, often expressed as beams or rays formed by a light source or by the interaction of light with matter. In physics and engineering the concept is used to describe the transport of electromagnetic radiation in a specific direction, with attention to how the light can be guided, focused, or dispersed.

The physical basis of lichtstromen is light as electromagnetic radiation that propagates as waves and photons. A light stream can be produced by a coherent source such as a laser or by collimation through lenses and apertures. The main properties of a light stream are direction, spectral composition (wavelength), intensity, coherence, and polarization. Quantities used to characterize it include radiant flux (watts), irradiance (watts per square meter), and radiance (watts per steradian per square meter).

Propagation and shaping of lichtstromen depend on the environment. In free space streams can diverge or remain narrow; in media such as optical fibers light is guided by total internal reflection. Diffraction, scattering, and refraction can alter a stream’s path and quality. Optical systems employ beam shaping, focusing, and filtering to produce controlled light streams for specific functions.

Applications of lichtstromen span many fields. Lighting design, photography, cinema, and stage production rely on controlled streams of light to create visibility and mood. In science and technology, laser beams, optical communication, and imaging systems depend on well-defined light streams. In cultural contexts, the term is sometimes used metaphorically to describe the dynamic flow of light in art installations and architectural lighting, where light is a central expressive element.
