Hysteroscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus. It involves inserting a thin, lighted telescope called a hysteroscope through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. This allows a healthcare provider to visualize the lining of the uterus, the openings of the fallopian tubes, and the cervix.

The procedure can be performed for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Diagnostically, it helps identify the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding, such as heavy periods, bleeding between periods, or postmenopausal bleeding. It can also be used to investigate infertility, recurrent miscarriages, or to investigate abnormalities found on imaging tests like ultrasound.

Therapeutically, hysteroscopy can be used to treat certain conditions. For example, polyps, fibroids, and adhesions within the uterus can be removed during the procedure. It can also be used to take biopsies of the uterine lining or to perform endometrial ablation, a procedure to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding.

Hysteroscopy is typically performed in a doctor's office or an outpatient surgical center. It may be done with local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia depending on the complexity of the procedure and patient preference. The procedure usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. After the procedure, some cramping and light bleeding may occur, but most women can return to their normal activities within a day or two.
