Lhégémonie is a concept in political science and international relations that describes the dominance of one state or entity over others. This dominance is not necessarily achieved through brute force, but can also be exerted through cultural, economic, or ideological influence. A hegemonic power is typically able to shape international norms, institutions, and agendas to its advantage.

The concept of hegemony has been analyzed by various scholars, with Antonio Gramsci being a prominent figure in its theoretical development. Gramsci distinguished between "domination" (coercion) and "hegemony" (consent), arguing that true hegemonic power lies in the ability to make the ruling class's worldview seem like the common sense, thus gaining the consent of the subordinate classes.

In international relations, hegemony can manifest in different forms. A unipolar world, where a single state possesses overwhelming power, is often considered a state of hegemony. This power can be economic, allowing the hegemonic state to set global trade rules and financial policies. It can also be military, deterring potential rivals and projecting power globally. Cultural hegemony can involve the spread of a nation's values, language, and lifestyle, making them attractive and seemingly superior to others.

The existence and nature of hegemony are often debated. Some scholars argue that a stable hegemonic order can provide global stability and facilitate cooperation. Others contend that hegemony inherently leads to resentment, resistance, and ultimately instability, as subordinate states seek to challenge the dominant power. The decline of a hegemonic power can lead to periods of uncertainty and conflict as a new balance of power emerges.
