They consist of a vertical cylindrical shell containing a series of horizontal plates, also known as trays. Each tray is designed to promote intimate contact between a liquid phase and a vapor phase.

The liquid typically flows downwards through the column, overflowing from one tray to the next, while the vapor rises upwards, passing through openings in each tray.
