Levyepiteelisistä refers to a type of tissue called squamous epithelium. This is a fundamental tissue type found throughout the body. Squamous epithelium is characterized by its flat, thin cells that resemble scales. These cells are arranged in one or more layers, depending on the specific location and function.

Simple squamous epithelium, consisting of a single layer of flat cells, is found in areas where diffusion and filtration are important. Stratified squamous epithelium, composed of multiple layers of cells, is found in areas that require protection against abrasion and wear. The outermost cells are typically flattened, while the deeper cells are more cuboidal or columnar. This type of epithelium forms the epidermis of the skin, the lining of the mouth, esophagus, and vagina. The constant shedding and regeneration of cells in stratified squamous epithelium provide a durable protective barrier.

Abnormalities or changes in squamous epithelium can be associated with various conditions, including inflammation and cancer. For instance, squamous cell carcinoma is a type of cancer that arises from squamous cells. The appearance and behavior of squamous cells are often examined microscopically in diagnostic procedures.
