Some schools use a traditional pattern with several periods per day, while others employ block or modular scheduling with longer periods dedicated to intensive teaching.

Pedagogical considerations include the ability to sequence topics, manage student attention, and coordinate teacher schedules. Longer periods can support in-depth projects, while shorter periods reduce cognitive fatigue and allow routing between classes. Breaks and planning times may be scheduled between lesperioden.
