These record companies were responsible for producing, distributing, and promoting music recordings in Hungary. They had significant influence over the types of music that were produced and marketed, and often prioritized music that was seen as "safe" or "patriotic." Many of these companies were also involved in the production of classical music, jazz, and traditional Hungarian folk music.

Lemezkiadások played a significant role in shaping the Hungarian music scene during the communist era. The state-owned record companies often promoted music that was seen as being in line with the Party's ideology. Artists who were deemed to be ideologically sound received preferential treatment, including access to better resources and marketing.

However, lemezkiadások also had a restrictive effect on the music industry. The lemezkiadások system was dismantled in the late 1980s, as Hungary transitioned to a more open and market-based economy. This led to a surge in independent record labels and a renewed focus on innovation and creativity in the Hungarian music industry.
