leiðangurs
Leiðangur refers to a medieval Nordic system of maritime conscription under which coastal communities were obliged to provide ships and crews for defense and for naval expeditions. The obligation existed in several Norse realms, notably Iceland, Denmark, and Norway, and lasted from early medieval times into the early modern period.
