Ledstruktur, or joint structure, refers to the organization and components that make up a joint in the skeletal system. In vertebrates, joints connect bones, enable movement, and help transfer loads while maintaining stability. The study of ledstruktur encompasses anatomy, biomechanics, and clinical aspects of how joints function and fail.

A typical joint consists of several key elements. The articular surfaces of adjacent bones are covered by articular cartilage to reduce friction. The joint is enclosed by a fibrous joint capsule, which can be lined by a synovial membrane that produces synovial fluid for lubrication. The capsule is supported by ligaments that stabilize the joint, while muscles and tendons surrounding the joint contribute dynamic stability and movement. Some joints contain bursae, which reduce friction between soft tissues.

Joints are commonly classified by movement and by tissue. Movement-based categories include synarthroses (immobile), amphiarthroses (slightly movable), and diarthroses (freely movable). Tissue-based classification includes fibrous joints (dense connective tissue), cartilaginous joints (cartilage between bones), and synovial joints (most mobile, with a synovial cavity). Within synovial joints, subtypes such as hinge, ball-and-socket, pivot, saddle, plane, and condyloid illustrate a range of motion patterns.

Functionally, ledstruktur supports mobility, distributes loads, and enables proprioception through sensory receptors. Clinically, joint problems such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, sprains, dislocations, and bursitis highlight the importance of intact ledstruktur. Diagnostic imaging (X-ray, MRI, ultrasound) aids assessment of both bony and soft-tissue components.
