Ledhölje is a Swedish term that translates to "joint sheath" or "capsule" in English. It refers to the connective tissue that encloses a synovial joint. This capsule is a crucial component of the musculoskeletal system, providing stability and preventing dislocation of the bones that articulate within the joint.

The ledhölje is composed of two layers. The outer fibrous layer is made of dense irregular connective tissue, which offers structural integrity and is often reinforced by ligaments. This layer helps to resist excessive movement and protect the joint from injury. The inner layer, known as the synovial membrane, is a thin membrane that lines the joint cavity, excluding the articular cartilage.
