A leafout, also known as fall color or autumn foliage, is the process through which the leaves of deciduous trees change color and fall from the tree as the growing season comes to an end. During the growth season, leaves are a bright green color due to the presence of chlorophyll. As the days shorten and the weather cools, trees prepare for the end of the growing season by slowing down their food-making processes. Carotenoids, which are found in the cell membranes of plants, are responsible for the yellow and orange colors often associated with fall foliage. Anthocyanins, on the other hand, produce red and purple colors and tend to be more prevalent in cooler temperatures. The combination and intensity of these pigments, as well as the quantity and composition of the leaf's cellular structure, can result in a wide range of colors, including yellow, orange, red, and sometimes even purple.

As the weather continues to cool, the turgor pressure within the leaf begins to decrease, causing the leaf to drop from the tree. This is a natural process, essential for the tree to conserve energy and resources during the winter months.
