Historically, lapis lazuli was a rare and expensive material, making lazúrmédiumok among the most costly pigments available to artists. Its extraction and processing involved crushing the stone and separating the lazurite from other minerals like calcite and pyrite, often through a complex and labor-intensive process.

The use of lazúrmédiumok dates back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, where it was highly valued for its intense blue hue.
