Lausealguse is a linguistic term used primarily in Estonian grammar and stylistics to refer to the characteristics and functions of the initial part of a sentence. The word is constructed from *lause* (sentence) and *alguse* (beginning), and it encompasses the set of words, particles, and structural patterns that appear at the start of a clause. In Estonian, as in many inflected languages, the sentence onset can carry information about focus, emphasis, mood, and syntactic structure.

A lausealguse often consists of an introductory word or phrase such as *iga* (each), *genu* (suddenly), or *esa* (first). These elements may also signal a specific discourse function: they can introduce a new topic, provide contrast, or express politeness. In addition, prepositions or conjunctions can play a role in shaping the syntactic frame; for example, *sest* (because) or *kuid* (but) may appear at the front of a sentence to link it to previous discourse.

Grammatical descriptions note that the position of the lexis at the beginning of the clause can affect word order in the remainder of the sentence. In Estonian the *VSO* (verb–subject–object) order can be elided or reordered when an introductory element occupies the space of the typical subject. This can create what is sometimes called “clitic movement”, a phenomenon where the subject appears after the main clause’s verb.
