Larvawei is a term used to describe the intermediate phase between a caterpillar and a pupa in the life cycle of certain moth and butterfly species. During this stage, the caterpillar undergoes significant transformation, releasing enzymes that break down most of its body structures.

The larva's body begins to liquefy, releasing cells from its organs, muscles, and tissues. These enzymes dissolve the majority of the larva's internal structures, while sparing some cells and tissues. The remaining cells, which include retinue cells, fat cells, and imaginal disc cells, form the basis for the pupa's internal organs and the future adult insect.

As the transformation progresses, the liquefied body undergoes a process called apolysis, where proteins, lipids, and other cellular components are released into the surrounding tissue. The rhytidome, the insect's skin, collapses, and a fluid-filled space called the histoblast forms. The imaginal discs, which contain the genetic information necessary for the development of adult traits, grow and differentiate, eventually giving rise to the pupa's adult features.

Eventually, the histoblast solidifies, forming a new tissue layer called the cyst, which houses the developing pupa. The larva's remnant organs are resorbed or destroyed, and a hardened outer shell, the rind, forms around the cyst, separating the pupa from the environment. This marks the end of the larval stage and the beginning of the pupal stage.
