Laringoskoopia is a medical procedure used to visualize the larynx, commonly known as the voice box. This examination is performed by a healthcare professional, typically an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose, and throat doctor), using a specialized instrument called a laryngoscope.

There are two main types of laryngoscopy: indirect and direct. Indirect laryngoscopy involves using a small mirror held at the back of the throat and a bright light source to reflect light onto the larynx, allowing the doctor to see it. Direct laryngoscopy utilizes a flexible or rigid tube with a light and camera attached, which is inserted into the throat. This allows for a more detailed view of the larynx and surrounding structures. Sedation or anesthesia may be used depending on the type of direct laryngoscopy and the patient's comfort.

Laringoskoopia is performed for several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. It can help identify the cause of hoarseness, persistent cough, difficulty swallowing, or a feeling of a lump in the throat. It is also used to detect abnormalities such as vocal cord polyps, nodules, cysts, inflammation, or tumors. In some cases, biopsies can be taken during direct laryngoscopy for further examination. Furthermore, the procedure can be used to check for issues after throat surgery or to assess the airway for intubation. The procedure is generally safe, with potential risks including temporary discomfort, bleeding, or a sore throat.
