One of the primary functions of lapsivesi is to cushion the fetus from external shocks and injuries. It also helps to maintain a constant temperature for the fetus, protecting it from extreme heat or cold. The fluid allows the fetus to move freely, which is essential for proper muscle and bone development. Furthermore, lapsivesi prevents the umbilical cord from being compressed, ensuring a continuous supply of nutrients and oxygen to the fetus.

The fetus swallows and inhales lapsivesi, which aids in the development of its digestive and respiratory systems. The kidneys of the fetus also contribute to the production of lapsivesi by excreting urine into the sac, and the fetus also swallows this fluid. This continuous cycle helps to maintain the volume and composition of the fluid.

The volume of lapsivesi increases throughout pregnancy, reaching its peak around 34-36 weeks, and then gradually decreases before labor. Changes in the amount or appearance of lapsivesi can sometimes indicate potential problems with the pregnancy. When the amniotic sac ruptures, often referred to as "the water breaking," it signals the onset of labor.
