Language certification refers to formal recognition issued by a recognized organization that a person has achieved a specified level of ability in one or more languages. Such certification is used to demonstrate language competence for education, employment, immigration, or personal validation of skills. Certifications can be obtained through standardized tests or through completion of accredited courses or programs.

There are two broad kinds of language certification. Standardized language tests provide a score and a level, often aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Examples include IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, PTE Academic, and Cambridge English examinations (such as FCE, CAE, and C2 Proficiency). These tests assess listening, reading, writing, and speaking, and their results are widely recognized by universities, employers, and government agencies. In addition, many institutions offer domain-specific certificates, such as English for academic purposes or business English, based on program completion rather than a single exam.

The certification process typically involves registration, test administration (or coursework completion), scoring, and the issuance of a certificate that states the level and sometimes subscores. Certificates may be valid for a limited period in practice, as many institutions require results within a recent window (commonly two years) for admission or eligibility.

While language certification supports mobility and standardization, it has limitations, including cost, access, test content biases, and the fact that a test may not capture all communicative abilities in real-world contexts.
