Laktaatti, or lactate in English, is a molecule produced by the body during cellular metabolism. It is a salt or ester of lactic acid. Lactate is primarily formed in muscle cells and red blood cells when the body needs energy and oxygen is not readily available. This process is known as anaerobic glycolysis.

Historically, lactate was often viewed as a waste product associated with muscle fatigue. However, current scientific understanding recognizes lactate as an important metabolic intermediate. It can be transported to other tissues, such as the heart and liver, and used as an energy source. The liver can also convert lactate back into glucose through a process called the Cori cycle.

Lactate levels in the blood can increase during strenuous exercise, indicating a shift towards anaerobic metabolism. Measuring blood lactate is a common practice in sports science to assess exercise intensity and recovery. Lactate also plays a role in signaling within the body and is involved in various physiological processes beyond energy production. Its presence and metabolism are crucial for maintaining cellular function under different metabolic conditions.
