Laitteistopuhelimet, known in English as hardware phones or sometimes desk phones, are physical telephone devices used for making and receiving calls. Unlike software-based phone solutions like VoIP applications on computers or smartphones, hardware phones are dedicated devices with a handset, dial pad, and often a display screen. They are commonly found in offices, call centers, and homes where a traditional telephony experience is preferred or required.

These devices can connect to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) directly or through a VoIP service. In a VoIP setup, a hardware phone connects to the internet and uses Voice over IP technology to transmit voice calls. This allows for features like call forwarding, voicemail integration, and conference calls, often managed through an IP-PBX system. Traditional analog hardware phones connect via standard telephone lines.

Modern hardware phones offer a range of features. Basic models provide essential calling functions, while more advanced models include features like speakerphones, headset jacks, programmable buttons for speed dial or accessing specific features, and large, color displays that can show caller ID, call history, and contact information. The user interface is typically navigated via physical buttons on the device itself. They are a staple in business communication due to their reliability and ease of use.
