Laenuvõlakiri, often translated as a loan bond or simply a bond, is a financial instrument representing a loan made by an investor to a borrower. Typically, this borrower is a government entity or a corporation. When an investor buys a laenuvõlakiri, they are essentially lending money to the issuer in exchange for a promise of repayment of the principal amount at a specified future date, known as the maturity date. In addition to the principal, the issuer usually agrees to pay the investor periodic interest payments, called coupon payments, over the life of the bond.
