Lümfipõletik, also known as lymphadenitis, is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of one or more lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped glands that are part of the body's immune system. They filter lymph fluid and trap harmful substances like bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells.

The most common cause of lümfipõletik is infection. Viral infections such as the common cold, flu, or mononucleosis can lead to swollen lymph nodes. Bacterial infections, like strep throat or skin infections, are also frequent culprits. Less commonly, lümfipõletik can be caused by inflammatory conditions, autoimmune diseases, or even certain types of cancer.

Symptoms of lümfipõletik typically include tenderness and swelling in the affected lymph nodes. The skin over the swollen node may appear red and feel warm to the touch. Other symptoms can vary depending on the underlying cause and may include fever, fatigue, sore throat, or a general feeling of unwellness.

Diagnosis of lümfipõletik usually involves a physical examination to assess the size, tenderness, and consistency of the lymph nodes. Further tests, such as blood work, imaging scans (like ultrasound), or even a lymph node biopsy, may be performed to determine the cause of the inflammation.

Treatment for lümfipõletik focuses on addressing the underlying cause. If an infection is present, antibiotics or antiviral medications may be prescribed. For inflammatory or autoimmune causes, specific treatments for those conditions will be initiated. In many cases, especially those caused by mild viral infections, the swelling and inflammation will resolve on their own without specific medical intervention.
