lögráða
Lögráða is a legal term in Icelandic law describing a person who has reached the age of majority, granting full legal capacity to exercise civil rights and obligations without parental or guardian consent. The age of majority in Iceland is 18. When someone turns 18, they obtain lögræði and may, among other things, enter into binding contracts, own property, sue and be sued, and participate in political processes, including voting in elections and standing for public office. In contrast, individuals under 18 typically require parental consent for many major acts, and their legal capacity can be limited; in cases of incapacity or disability, a guardian (lögráðumaður) may be appointed to manage certain affairs.
