Lappaleikkausten, often translated as flap surgery or gingival flap surgery, is a dental surgical procedure performed by periodontists. It is primarily used to treat severe periodontal disease, also known as advanced gum disease. The purpose of the surgery is to gain access to the tooth roots and the surrounding bone, which are often affected by deep pockets of bacteria and inflammation.

During the procedure, the periodontist makes incisions in the gum tissue to lift a flap. This allows for a clear view of the underlying bone and tooth roots, enabling thorough cleaning of the infected areas. Diseased tissue, plaque, and calculus are removed. In some cases, the bone may need to be reshaped to reduce the depth of the periodontal pockets and create a more manageable environment for oral hygiene. Once the cleaning and any necessary bone contouring are completed, the gum flap is repositioned and sutchiured back into place.

Post-operative care is crucial for successful healing and involves a specific cleaning regimen and potentially antibiotics.
