Lääkeainetutkimus, known in English as drug discovery or pharmaceutical research, is the multifaceted process by which new potential medicines are identified and developed. This extensive endeavor involves a range of scientific disciplines, including chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and medicine, all working collaboratively towards the goal of creating safe and effective treatments for diseases. The initial stages typically focus on understanding the underlying biological mechanisms of a disease, identifying a specific target, such as a protein or gene, that plays a critical role in the disease's progression. Once a target is identified, researchers then search for or design molecules, known as drug candidates, that can interact with this target in a beneficial way. This often involves high-throughput screening of vast chemical libraries or rational drug design based on the target's structure.

Following the identification of promising drug candidates, extensive preclinical testing is conducted. This phase involves in vitro studies using cells and tissues, as well as in vivo studies using animal models, to assess the drug's efficacy, toxicity, and pharmacokinetic properties, which describe how the drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted by the body. If a drug candidate demonstrates a favorable safety and efficacy profile in preclinical studies, it can then proceed to clinical trials, which involve testing in human volunteers. Clinical trials are conducted in several phases, starting with small groups of healthy individuals to assess safety and dosage, and progressing to larger groups of patients with the target disease to confirm efficacy and monitor side effects. The entire drug discovery and development process is highly regulated and can take many years, often over a decade, and involves significant financial investment.
