küsitakse

Küsitakse is a form of the Estonian verb used to express that something is being asked. It is the present, passive form of küsima, meaning to ask. In Estonian, the passive voice allows statements about actions without naming the agent, so the doer of the asking is often unspecified or irrelevant. The form typically ends with -akse (with some roots producing -takse), and it agrees with tense rather than with a specific subject.

The word is common in formal, journalistic, and academic language, as well as in everyday speech when the speaker wants to describe a question or inquiry without pointing to who asks. It is frequently found in news reports, survey reports, and official communications to present information neutrally.

Examples of use include: Osalejatelt küsitakse arvamust. (Participants are asked for their opinion.) Uuringus küsitakse vastuseid mitmetelt osalejatelt. (The study asks for responses from several participants.) In contrast, the active counterpart would be küsima, as in "Küsib asjakohased osapooled" (the parties ask the relevant questions). Past tense forms include küsiti, while future or conditional forms are formed with corresponding auxiliary constructions.
