Külmavärinaid, commonly known as shivers or chills, are involuntary muscle contractions that cause a trembling or shaking sensation. This physiological response is often experienced when the body is trying to generate heat, typically in response to a drop in external temperature. The rapid contracting and relaxing of muscles produces kinetic energy, which in turn increases body temperature.

Besides cold, külmavärinaid can also be triggered by other stimuli. They are a common symptom of fever, as the body's internal thermostat is set higher, and the chills are a mechanism to reach that elevated temperature.
