Könshormonproduktion, also known as sex hormone production, refers to the physiological process by which the body generates sex hormones. These hormones are primarily produced in the gonads – the testes in males and the ovaries in females – but also in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands. The main male sex hormone is testosterone, and the primary female sex hormones are estrogen and progesterone.

The production of these hormones is regulated by a complex feedback loop involving the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland in the brain. The hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Sex hormones play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of secondary sexual characteristics, such as the growth of pubic hair, deepening of the voice in males, and breast development in females. Furthermore, sex hormones influence mood, metabolism, bone density, and muscle mass throughout a person's life. The levels of these hormones fluctuate naturally with age, puberty, and reproductive cycles.
